Grandview Golf Course Review – GolfBlogger Golf Blog

Grandview Golf Course
Kalkaska, Michigan
Grade: B+
Teacher’s Comments: A friendly, affordable Northern Michigan resort style course.

Grandview sits in a pleasant place somewhere between neighborhood course and Up North Michigan resort.

The “Grand View” is evident from the moment you arrive at the clubhouse, which sits on heights overlooking miles of forest. The first hole four holes play up and down the ridge, before running into a stretch on lowlands that runs past marsh. The routing then climbs again to the hill for the tenth, which plunges back down to the lowlands. After meandering through forest and past marsh, the final three holes bring players back up again to the clubhouse summit.

As with so many Northern Michigan resort courses, Grandview features wide, tree-lined, player-friendly fairways. Interest is maintained by elevation changes, half a dozen holes with fairway bunkers, bits of marsh and ten doglegs — one of which is effectively a double dogleg.

Grandview is not easy, but neither is it tricked up. A bogey golfer could have a good time at Grandview shooting bogey golf.

Sixteen at Grandview is a 568-yard par 5.

Grandview is an epic Northern Michigan experience, yet somehow felt more like a neighborhood course. Perhaps it was the exceedingly friendly clubhouse staff. Or that the pro didn’t bat an eye when I asked if I could walk (I could, and did). Or that there was a fivesome boucing from hole to hole giving off the vibes of a group playing a few pre-league holes at my local muni.

Fifteen at Grandview is a 359-yard par 4

My favorite hole was the par four fifteenth. Beginning on a heights, the fairway plunges down and doglegs to the right. Three bunkers are on the outside edge of the curve. Playing inside the curve will shorten the second, but bring trees on the right into play.

Once in the lower fairway, players discover a hidden bit of marsh and stream crossing from the right, about a hundred yards to the green. It’s not a real threat, unless your drive was a well-struck fade. As the hole is just 359 yards with significant elevation, that’s a possibility.

What I liked about the hole is that it nearly encapsulates the course. It has a pretty view; heights; a generous fairway; hazards that are threatening, but not too much so; a bit of marsh; and beautiful Up North hole isolation with trees lining the edges.

At 6, 598 yards from the tips, Grandview is not “championship” long, but is long enough for most.

Four at Grandview is a 422-yard par 4.

Conditions on the day I played were good. Fairways were covered with green stuff, even if it wasn’t always grass and in places was a little thin. A torrential rain had delayed by start time by forty minutes, so the course was wet in some low places near marsh. Given the rain, it is impossible to say if the softness was a result of the immediate rain, or endemic to the locations.

Tee boxes and greens were in good shape. The edges of the holes mostly led to forest, but were tidy up to that point. Tidy also were the edges of the marsh areas and ponds.

The eleventh at Grandview is a 505-yard par 5.

Grandview is a bit far from GolfBlogger’s Northern Michigan Headquarters to play on a regular basis, but if one of my golf buddies said “hey, let’s play Grandview,” I would certainly be up for another round. The course would be spectacular with fall color.

If you are staying in the Kalkaska area and are looking for a nice, friendly place to play, I can recommend it.
