The Five Best Golf Sweaters You Can Buy Right Now

If you’ve been watching the Genesis Invitational, you may have seen Tommy Fleetwood rocking the Sun Day Red Rhythm Stripe Cashmere Crew sweater. And It’s a great reminder that the beginning of the golf season is usually cold, wet, and windy. In a word: miserable. “Braving it” and going in with just your short-sleeve polo does not make you cool, tough, or smart. In fact, it makes you the exact opposite. In my opinion, a good sweater is the backbone of an efficient, effective, and stylish golfing wardrobe, and will be crucial in helping get you through late-winter and early-spring golf. That being said, these are the five best golf sweaters you can buy right now.

I kid you not, this sweater is the foundation of my entire wardrobe. I have it in almost every color, and I take it with me everywhere. Don’t believe me? Ask my wife, and she’ll tell you, I keep one in the car, in my backpack, in my work bag, and in my locker. If I’m not wearing this to the course, it’s in my golf bag. While Uniqlo poster child, Adam Scott, prefers their Merino sweater, I’m a Washable Milano Ribbed guy for just that reason: it’s washable. With wool, your options for washing are dry cleaning or sponge cleaning and then air drying. Admittedly, I’m a bit too lazy for that. I love that I can throw these in the washer and dryer and that they keep their shape and always feel clean. I like this sweater more than the J.Press Shaggy Dog, and that’s one of my all-time favorite pieces of clothing. To make things better, the Washable Milano Ribbed sweater is $39.90, and I’ve had several for years and they’re still going strong. Not only is this one of the best values in golf, it’s one of the best values out there, period.

We already know that Holderness & Bourne makes great golf polos. The Ward Crewneck Sweater came up on the radar a couple of weeks ago, and let me tell you: this is an exceptional, exceptional sweater. It looks so high-quality (because it is) and feels like a hug. I called out the jacquard knit pattern before, but it looks even better in person. Once again, if you’re a luxury-oriented golfer, this is the sweater for you. However, I’m also a cost-per-wear kinda guy, and if you want an investment piece, you’ll more than get your money’s worth with this.

This one is the wildcard on the list because we don’t really associate L.L. Bean with golf, but with the Mockneck Quilted Sweatshirt, it’s time we do. If this looks anything like the Holderness & Bourne sweater before, that’s because this one also has a jacquard knit pattern and also looks striking in-person. Unlike the other options listed, this one isn’t a sweater in the traditional sense (L.L. Bean calls it a sweatshirt) and feels more like what you’d expect from a performance pullover. However, this one’s a little heavier, thus making it warmer than your standard performance pullover. This is another “sweater” I wear on and off course pretty often. Again, I’ve had a couple of these for years and they’re still kicking. For less than $100, this is a great buy.

Some of us got a proper introduction to Quince in our best polos article, but now that you’ve been properly introduced, it should come as no surprise that Quince also makes a great golf sweater. The Mongolian Cashmere Crewneck is also a reminder that you don’t need to spend a fortune to get a cashmere sweater. This sweater is less than $60, and is a perfect piece to help you look sharp on and off the course. None of us will ever look or be as cool as “Cashmere” Keith, but if you want to give it your best try, here’s your chance.

Admittedly, this is the most fashion forward sweater here (that’s why I like it), and it’s also the most expensive. Like most of G/FORE’s stuff, their Color Block Sweater isn’t for everyone but that doesn’t mean that it’s not good. This sweater is a powerhouse and it looks it. You’re not going to see many sweaters that look like this, and if you’re someone who likes to subtly stand out, this is the sweater for you.
