Dennis Guerriero Wins Michigan Net Amateur Championship
GRAND BLANC – Dennis Guerriero, a South Carolina resident who spends time with his 88-year-old mother in Brighton in the summer and maintains a GAM membership, shot a closing net 72 Tuesday at Atlas Valley Golf Club to win the 24th Michigan Net Amateur Championship presented by Michigan Golf Live.
It was the first GAM win for the 64-year-old mortgage company owner who has competed in GAM net events the last few years.
“First of all, I want to thank God,” he said. “I control nothing. I go out there and play something that is fun, and I love doing it. God determines what happens and so I appreciate what he’s done for me today.”
Guerriero shot a net 5-under 67 in the first round Monday to set the pace and then held the lead through the rainy second round. His net 5-under 139 total was three shots clear of the field and made possible by his gross scores of 83 and 88 and 16 strokes of handicap.
Jason Korody of Howell, playing with seven strokes of handicap, shot a second consecutive net 71 for 142 and second place.
Matthew Mason of Greenville, who shot a net 69 for 144, and Jeremy Fallis of Dexter, who shot a net 72 for 144, rounded out the top four. Justin Allen of Clarkston, who shot 71, and Bill Dietz of Livonia, who shot net 72, were next at 145.
A field of 78 male golfers with USGA/GAM Handicap Indexes of 20.4 or better squared off over 36 holes of net stroke play.
Guerriero said he enjoyed the day despite the rain.
“The staff and volunteers here at GAM, in every event that I’ve been at, make sure everything is good and really enjoyable,” he said. “And when you work hard for something, yes, there comes a fruition, and it’s kind of luck, because opportunity met preparation.
“I know I’m not the greatest golfer in Michigan, but you know, this is my moment, and now that I’m getting older, you know, my skills are getting loose, so it’s nice to win something knowing that I’m getting older. I probably won’t have too many more opportunities.”
Guerriero said his father passed away about 18 months ago and it has prompted more visits to Michigan.
“I’m a graduate of Dearborn Divine Child High School and Eastern Michigan University and it’s nice that I’m able to come up and spend time with my mother, help her out and play in some GAM events,” he said.
