Forest Akers East to Host 17th GAM Junior Stroke Play Championship

 EAST LANSING –Forest Akers East Golf Course at Michigan State University will once again host the 17th GAM Junior Stroke Play Championship presented by Imperial Headwear on Thursday and Friday, July 17 and 18.

  It’s the ninth consecutive year the course has hosted the championship.

The tournament field is comprised of 15-and-under boys and girls who will play 36 holes of stroke play, consisting of 18 holes each day of the competition. A champion will be crowned in each division.

 Forest Akers East Course was founded in 1958, and redesigned in 1997 by Arthur Hills, which included a change from par 71 to par 72. The course now features tree-lined fairways and strategic bunkers.

 Bryan Harris, PGA professional and general manager at Forest Akers since 2017, was named GAM Club Services Representative of the Year in 2024 for his exceptional service to golf in Michigan. Ben Keeler is the golf course superintendent. Learn more at golf.msu.edu.

 The GAM Junior Stroke Play Championship has long served as a launching pad for Michigan’s top young talent. Allyson Geer of Brighton, a two-time Michigan Women’s Amateur champion and 2018 GAM Women’s Champion, called it her first major victory in the state. Notable alumni also include recent U.S. Amateur champion James Piot of Canton and professional golfer Andrew Walker of Battle Creek.

 In last year’s championship, Midland’s David Han claimed the Boys Division title after carding a final 68 for a 2-under total 140. Troy’s Hannah Kim secured the Girls Division title, following a 4-over finish and 146 total.

 This year will feature the top junior players in the state, including defending champion Hannah Kim of Troy, 2024 GAM 15-and-under Junior Girls’ Player of the Year, Saisha Patil, Anika Srivastava of Okemos, and Parker Westcott of Manchester.
