Dutch Hollow Golf Course Review
Durch Hollow Golf Course
Durand, Michigan
Grade: C
Teachers’ Comments: Short, straightforward, unpretentious and inexpensive.
Dutch Hollow is a low key farmlands course serving Durand, MI and surrounding areas. It is not the sort of place to seek out, but locals surely appreciate its place in the community.
The course is on the short side (5, 554 yards), generally flat and open. Most of Dutch Hollow’s holes are straight shots. Several of the par fours are drivable for moderate to long hitters. Tidy rough and areas between the holes make “going for it” a legitimate play even for the less accurate.

The routing had an awkward convergence of greens and tee boxes around the fourth and seventh tee boxes, which were separated by a chickenwire fence.

Water appears on nine holes, but I never felt as though they presented a real obstacle. The par three eighth was pinched on the right side by a pond that appeared on the left of the third hole, but any reasonable swing will avoid both easily.

For all of its flatness, I thought that Dutch Hollow was in places a pretty course.

Dutch Hollow would be a great course for a charity outing. It has a nice looking restaurant and bar, and an adjacent driving range. The course layout would ensure that groups had fun and that the outing wouldn’t last six hours.

Dutch Hollow is a short, and not a Golf Association of Michigan member course, so it doesn’t have a rating and slope. It plays as a fairly easy course, with no carries or meaningful elevation changes.
| Tees | Yardage | Slope | Rating |
| White | 5, 554 | N/A | N/A |
| Gold | 5, 005 | N/A | N/A |
| Red | 4, 794 | N/A | N/A |

Conditions on the day I played were a bit of a mixed bag. Fairways varied between sparse and decent. The greens were in good shape. Tee boxes needed help.
On the other hand, Dutch Hollow takes good care of the edges of the holes, which is a particular bugaboo of mine. I really dislike approaching my ball a yard or two deep in the rough, looking to the left and thinking that just a couple of steps more and I would be entering the Heart of Darkness. Cut that stuff back, and give the players, the hole and the grass some air to breathe and sun to warm.
At Dutch Hollow, trees between the holes were tidy, as were the edges of the ponds and streams. It was a very pleasant parklands golf experience.
No one will mistake Dutch Hollow for a higher end course; but in its defense, it doesn’t pretend to be. The green fee for walking was just $20, and I saw a bunch of walkers on the course. Dutch Hollow is inexpensive, basic golf serving a community that no doubt is glad to have it. For that, and its lack of pretension, it gets a solid passing grade.
