When I started GolfBlogger back in 2004, I had no inkling that I would still be at it more than two decades later.
My sole motivation in starting the blog was to have a place to indulge my passion for writing after making a career switch from political writer to high school social studies teacher. Blogging was new in those days, and I really didn’t expect anyone to actually read my scrivening.
And yet, for some reason, people have. By the literal millions.
2025 was my first full year of retirement from school teaching, leaving me with the ability to do a lot of golf things that I previously had to skip.
In January 2025, I spent the better part of a week attending the PGA Show as a part of checking off bucket list items. I did not return in 2026, but think now that I probably should have.
In April, I headed to Augusta for the annual meeting of the Golf Writers Association and the Wednesday practice round of the Masters. I have a ton of photos, but have never published them because I think doing so might violate the terms of my ticket. I just enjoy them my myself.
Check off another box.
As usual, I played a lot of golf in the summer. Nothing has changed for me in retirement as far as that goes.
In the fall of 2025, I headed up to the Upper Peninsula to watch West Virginia University’s golf team play in the Island Resort Intercollegiate. My alma mater won that tournament in record setting fashion.
Watch a college tournament in person: check. Watch the WVU golf team: check.
It was another one of those things I never would have been able to do if I were still tethered to the classroom.
Another memorable event this last year was playing in the pro-am in the inaugural Great Lakes Championship at Boyne Highlands. I then spent the next several days covering the championship. Such fun!.
For a variety of reasons — including a certain lack of initiative on my part — I did not manage to get to points south during the winter months here in Michigan. One of my priorities for this next “off-season” is to plan a trip to Mississippi, Alabama and Louisiana to play some winter golf.
Even so, I managed to play several rounds in December, January and February right here in southeast Michigan. A couple of rounds in March have extended my consecutive streak of months played in Michigan to 133.
The streak is not as crazy as it sounds. There have always been a week or two in December, January and February with a thaw, and I am never the only person on the course. There are a lot of dedicated golfers here in Michigan.
As far as statistics go, in the past year, I published 617 articles, bring the blog total to 14, 284.
That’s a lot, I think. But it shows that there is never a lack of things to write about when it comes to golf.
I’ll raise a glass of scotch to another year of GolfBlogger.
