These Golf Balls Out-Spun The Pro V1 Around The Green—And They’re Cheaper, Too

In the 2025 Golf Ball Test presented by UNRL, the Titleist Pro V1 served as our calibration ball and, as expected, it performed exceptionally well. At 5,689 rpm of spin off the 35-yard wedge, it remains one of the most balanced golf balls on the market.

But that doesn’t mean it spun the most.

Several balls in our 2025 test produced more greenside spin than the Pro V1, offering serious short-game bite and control. Here’s a look at the models that topped it in the 35-yard wedge test and how they performed across the rest of the bag.

The Maxfli Tour X outspun Pro V1 on the 35-yard wedge (5,948 rpm). It also ranked among the fastest off the driver and was the mid-speed driver distance leader. While keeping driver spin on the lower side, the Tour X is a rare mix of speed, distance and short-game stopping power. Tour X stayed stable through the irons, creating a consistent flight without needing a towering launch.

The Vice Pro Plus beat the Pro V1 on the 35-yard wedge (5,823 rpm). At high speed, it sat firmly in the low-spin driver category. The pairing of low driver spin and above-average wedge spin makes it one of the few balls that can help off the tee and still check up around the green.

The 35-yard spin rate on the Srixon Z-STAR DIVIDE came in at 5,818 rpm. DIVIDE was also among the highest-flying balls for low swing-speed players, producing more peak height and steeper landing angles that translate to easier green-holding. Its two-tone urethane cover adds visual feedback.

The Z-STAR edged out Pro V1 on the 35-yard test (5,814 rpm). The Z-STAR showed higher-than-average driver spin at high speed for players who want more height off the tee. For slower swings, it offered solid distance paired with strong spin consistency.

The Maxfli Tour also outspun Pro V1 (5,798 rpm). It stood out among the highest-flying irons in our high-speed portion, producing a steep descent angle that helps shots hold greens.

Slightly above Pro V1 off the wedge (5,743 rpm). Triad appeared in our low-spin driver group at mid and low swing speeds, producing a flatter flight that leaned on bounce and roll for distance. Despite that, it kept enough spin around the greens to offer reliable stopping power, making it a controlled, balanced pick for moderate swing speeds.

Final thoughts

The Pro V1 continues to define what a balanced golf ball looks like but it isn’t the spinniest option in 2025. Golfers chasing extra control on short shots can find it in other models.
