Atlas Valley Golf Club Hosting 15th GAM Women’s Four- Ball

  GRAND BLANC – Atlas Valley Golf Club’s historic course will host many of the state’s top amateur women golfers Monday and Tuesday, Aug. 11-12, in the 15th GAM Women’s Four-Ball Championship presented by Saint John’s Resort.

  Two-golfer teams will compete in four-ball or best-ball stroke play over 36 holes. Championship teams will be determined in the Overall Division (ages 49-and-under) and the Senior Division (50-and-over).

  Atlas Valley, previously known as Atlas Valley Country Club, is a semi-private facility with a course originally designed in 1912 by legendary architect Tom Bendelow, a prolific designer of over 600 courses including the famous East Lake Golf Club in Atlanta and the three courses at Medinah Country Club in suburban Chicago.

  Bendelow’s naturalist’s approach to design is evident in the course at Atlas Valley that is built on about 150 acres of rolling, scenic land. Kearsley Creek winds through the course.

  Since the ownership change in recent years significant renovation has included the clubhouse exterior and interior, dining and banquet facilities, irrigation on the course, course bunkers and cart paths. A tree removal program was implemented as well.

  Last year at Boulder Creek Golf Club in Grand Rapids, Elise Fennell of Caledonia and Jessica Jolly of Rockford won the Overall Division, and Joan Garety of Ada and Terry Delcamp, formerly of Grand Blanc, won an unprecedented eighth Senior Division title.

  Delcamp and Garety are entered and will be going after another title. Fennell and Jolly are not entered this year.

  The Overall and Senior winning teams will have their names inscribed on the permanent tournament trophy, which is named The Garety/Hiestand Trophy in honor of Garety and fellow Michigan Golf Hall of Fame member Mary Jane Hiestand.
